This painting takes a playful, slightly comical spin on the drama of an old masters painting.

In the background, dramatic figures run and shout as a boat sails away from them, creating that sense of urgency and theatre, but with a lighter touch. I loved the idea of borrowing that grand old-world feeling and turning it into something a little more humorous and unexpected. It is full of movement, storytelling and that slightly absurd feeling of everyone reacting just a little too late.

Original oil painting on canvas by Northern Beaches artist Nikki Quarry.
